Gardening

I love to garden and it’s great time w/the kids. Matthew is especially excited (he always has loved gardens). Of course, there’s a time for gardening here in the north country and this is it so we’re scrambling to get things in the ground. Then we’ll have the leisure of the summer to tend and enjoy it. The rain is good but it’s hard to balance when we have time to plant and when it’s not raining just yet. Hopefully next week if not this week. Stay posted for updates as to what we’re planting, when and where. Here’s the current status in summary:

(1) have purchased hanging baskets of geraniums for the porch (two weeks ago)
(2) have planted seedlings of tomatoes etc in the veggie garden (one week ago Wednesday at 8pm - it got pretty dark while I was out there!)
(3) have (mostly) planted the deck planters w/flowers (today)
(4) have purchased but not yet planted flowers for driveway and front garden (bought two days ago)
(5) have purchased but not yet planted seeds for veggie garden (bought two days ago)
(6) purchased (online) a new trimmer/weed wacker - it arrived while we were out of town this past weekend and yesterday I tried it out (before the rain came). It will be wonderful for keeping the gardens edged and the lawn pretty. yay!

Below is a picture of Steve working to make my veggie garden bed back in April (something I’ve been aching for since we moved in). It took him a week or so of regular effort to dig it, then another week or so to “build the sides” to border it. It will be wonderful to have veggies growing in the ground instead of in pots this year. The yard is shady but this spot seems ok based on pot experimentation the past couple years and the semi-raised 8′x8′ bed w/good fertile soil will help. The kids love helping and the dirt pile (yucky sandy rocky stuff) has been a blast for digging and using trucks now for more than a month. I’ll get updated pictures uploaded once it’s all planted so you can see the finished project. Hopefully we’ll get some grass to grow next to it too this or next year and have more of a lawn than a dirt pit (formerly a sand pit from where the pool was when we moved in). We’re making headway at least. More pictures in our family albums . . .
