Just the Two of Us
We celebrated 11 years of marriage back in July but due to a number of factors, including convenience, gas prices, kids, and finances generally speaking, we decided not to go away to celebrate. All those details just didn’t “fit” what we would have enjoyed doing. However, in late September, a deal came along, close to home (bonus!), which allowed us to get away for two full days and nights to enjoy some time just the two of us. The timing was good in light of the new baby coming later in the fall and seeing how the kids did (esp. Elizabeth) away from us, something we have done at most once or twice in the past few years.
Because it involved two weeknights and school, we split the kids up. Emily stayed with the Moino’s, a family we’ve gotten to know reasonably well and whose daughter, Caroline, is in her class this year. Matthew and Elizabeth stayed with a family from church, the Polley’s, who have a girl, Sierra, Matthew’s age and a two-year old, Samantha. Emily and Matthew knew all the folks involved and were very comfortable and very excited about this special time away, and it went well for everyone. Elizabeth surprised us the most by not even crying or expressing that she missed us, even though she did note that we weren’t there.
In the meantime, Steve and I had a restful time away. Our destination was the Trapp Family Lodge, with which we are quite familiar having spent so much time there with my parents due to their time share in the condos, and so there was plenty to enjoy and because there was little to “learn” we were able to settle into relaxing easily and with little “transition.” The exciting folks we are, our activities involved sleeping, eating, reading, meandering, and all in all doing exactly nothing. It was perfect. And it was also a lovely time with nice weather, still summery, lots of green, and the like. Since we usually go there in the winter, seeing the lodge in “summer” in and of itself was nice.

This picture we took from our window looked just like one of their postcards.
This final picture is in our room and pictures a “quiet space” - the kind we like to make in our lives to encourage us to rest and to seek God daily. We took it to remind ourselves of what a nice getaway it was and to help us to remember to make such “spaces” and take such times even at home with what will soon be four young children buzzing around us.

You must be “nesting”. Getting all the little “loose ends” settled. Getting all your activities up-dated. It must be time to go. Hope to hear from you soon. Love, mom
